Our family has been dealing with autism for over 8 years. Our second daughter, Paula, was diagnosed first with speech and language delay, then PDD NOS, then finally Aspergers in 2006.
We have been able to gain support and help for Paula through the Fairfax County school system. She has an IEP and has been able to leverage the support of the Special Education professionals at her school. However, we were struggling as a family with in-home support for us as parents, for Paula’s 2 sisters, and for our extended family.
Paula had been diagnosed with epilepsy and needed to take anti-seizure medication twice daily. The Autism prevented Paula from understanding the need to take her medication on a regular basis. She eventually started to refuse to take it altogether. We were at a loss for how to help Paula understand the importance of her medication and make her take it on a regular basis.
Then Mr. Jesse Kushner called; answering a request for help over the internet. He was very attentive in listening to our family’s situation. He was confident about his organization’s ability to help us. He was deliberate about the plan that he wanted to take with Paula and our family and eager to start.
That phone call was over a year ago. Since then, Paula has come a long way with her behavior and progress. She takes her medication more regularly and with fewer battles than when Jesse’s team first met her. We have also leveraged PERS for reading and reading comprehension services that have helped Paula immensely. More recently, we have hired PERS for sibling support to our oldest daughter who having difficulty understanding all of the nuances and impacts of Paula’s Autism.
In summary, our family has significantly benefited from Jesse Kushner and his team of professionals at PERS. It is with this positive experience that we recommend PERS to other families who need support.
